Yuletide Letter to Santa
Dec. 1st, 2009 11:37 pmDear You
You're probably here looking for more about me, what I like in a fic, and why I chose the fandoms I chose. Hopefully your questions shall be answered but if not, I promise I don't bite if you want to ask.
At least I don't bite hard.
This is nothing but a collection of ideas, thoughts and the odd bit of random information - the highest priority request I have is to use your imagination and write something that inspires you, that you enjoy writing. I'm sure to enjoy it as a result. My favorite fic is something that explores the written word, a character, a relationship, a location - anything - and makes me think as a result. I like ideas that surprise me and force me to reconsider my conception of things. Het, slash, gen, it's pretty much all good for me as long as it is well written.
My dislikes are probably fairly usual, non-con, incest and too much gore.
These are in whatever order they ended up in...
Leverage - Any
Details - Would love a story that looks back on how Eliot came to do/be what he is. Likewise an ensemble piece with them on a case/heist or a what I did on my summer vacation-esque look at what they all did between S1 & S2. Prefer Gen.
Additional Info - There is something addictive about a show where I am constantly surprised at how they resolve the story and amused at how seamlessly a collection of diametrically different characters blend together into a whole. The dynamic isn't quite the same when any one of them is missing, like puzzles pieces that got lost under the couch. The dialouge is snappy, layered and I rarely feel talked down to. Admittedly Eliot is a favorite of mine, the bits of his backstory that we have been given and the way he views violence are intruiging and hint at a story begging to be told.
The Jane Austen Book Club (book or movie) - Grigg, Jocelyn, Daniel, Sylvia
Details - Couples as a theme. In Jane Austen versus in The Jane Austen Book Club. New, old, broken, mended, friendships, loves, exciting, comfortable etc.
Additional Info - I adored this book when I first found it on the local authors table at my neighborhood Borders, not only was the story compelling but the author wove it all into a setting that I was intimately familiar with which gave it an added life. I soon had a copy at work, one at home and another on hand to give to people. This novel is about relationships, like Jane Austen's novels, the story unfolding revolves around the people - all of whom are flawed and gloriously human - their relationships to each other, and their relationships with themselves and their surroundings.
Margaret Atwood - The Handmaids Tale - Any
Details - I really am drawn to the religion as government, and the bible as a literal translation of action aspect of this book. Anything that looks at an exploration of the theocracy in the lives of the characters would be interesting. Gen preferred.
Additional Info - I read this book for the first time when I was fifteen, it took multiple readings and ten years for me to be able to begin to grasp the impact of the story being told. Most compelling to me is the relationships between the women in this novel, the roles they are assigned and how that impacts their understanding and communication with each other. Men, even men of differing ranks, can speak to each other and interact with each other if not as equals then as men. The roles imposed on the women: wife, mother, whore, household help etc. effectively keeps them from coming together in any meaningful way.
MI-5 aka Spooks - Jo Portman, Lucas North, Malcolm Wynn-Jones, Colin Wells
Details - I'm drawn to the gradual change in Jo from when we meet her through to the current season, and there really isn't enough fic about her. I'd love to see that change explored. A Malcolm/Colin buddy fic would be great too. Gen/Het both welcome.
Additional Info - Spooks is something I learned to love. Gradually appreciating the depth in storytelling and in the characters - liberally spiced with a bit of sex and violence for flavor. The characters are written as real people, with real flaws and desires. They make mistakes, they believe in something better for their country, they fight, shag, kill and die. They are not perfect. They grow, learn and in some cases refuse to accept the lessons they are being taught. The characters despair and yet the story being told is always one of contiuned hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Hope all that helps, or at least makes sense.
