My Own Personal Santa
Dec. 14th, 2009 02:40 pmI'm a little in love with the guy who runs the dish installation company that installed my dish a year ago.
Background: They're removing/replacing the balcony's and railings at my complex. That drama aside see previous rant about construction scheduling lameness, I have discovered another issue.
The new railings (they don't know when they will be installed) are made of.. vinyl or something. As such the HOA dude has informed me that my dish can't be reinstalled using bolts as I am not allowed to bolt to it.
Unfortunately Direct TV doesn't have any clamp options. So I did some engineering and google searches and found a couple options:
Wood:

Steel:

Then today (because all this was late late Friday as getting HOA dude to call me back is like finding Osama bin Laden) I called the guy from the company that installed the Dish originally. He informed me that they have these things that will clamp to the underside of your eaves that they could come install (he even explained to me how to make sure they get the reinstallation contract from Direct TV).
I was all, well no I can't attach it to the building per the HOA rules, but the FCC has a statute that says they have to let me attach it to the railing as it is an 'exclusive use' area. Can the clampy thing work on the railing? He laughed and said maybe - it would depend on what the railing looked like BUT that the FCC statute says more than that - and basically says that the HOA can't restrict me from attaching it to the building as long as no damage is being done - thus the clampy thing.
So now he's looking for pictures and a copy of the statute for me to send to my HOA and try to get approval.
I'm still pretty sure i will be getting cut off from my cable for a while but I feel like there are options and all is not lost.
Dish installation man and his 'Tell your HOA to bite you' attitude is my own personal Santa right now - even if he fails.
