Resolutions are something I make and fail to keep - still I make them and then I am always disappointed when I look at my year and my failure. I was reading something that I don't remember anymore about these women who had an idea to replace resolutions.

It struck me as an intriguing idea at the time and after mulling it over I think I'm going to try it.

So instead of making resolutions I will inevitably fail at, I am going to pick a word that will guide me through the year. A touchstone. A reminder not of specific hopes I had while drunk on New Years Eve but of the sense of what I would like my year to be for me.

I'll still be doing things, and trying to make change happen in my life but without the limitation of a list.

I've looked at lists of words and let them percolate to see if any resonated. I've held one in my head for a day to see if it changed my perceptions and reactions. I've picked up, tried on and discarded words and then picked them up and tried again.

I have settled on: Release.

We'll see what happens.

I've done this the last two years and found it worked really well. I'm still whittling my list down, trying to find the right word for 2010, but Release is a good one and in my final 5 I'm playing around with, too. :-)
