Name: Thessaly

Character Fandom: Sandman Chronicles

Canonical Point of Entry: After the Sandman Chronicles: Witch for Hire series.

Physical Description: Thessaly is small, no more than 5’-4” and decidedly waifish in appearance. Slight, girlish and perpetually ageless she has the air of something ancient and young all at the same time. Her features are unremarkable, straight, dark hair, honey skin and large dark rimmed glasses that frame her eyes.

Her eyes may be her only notable feature; a person looking closely can see the ageless wisdom and inherent beauty of her in her dark luminous eyes. Of course they may also see the ruthlessness and determination hidden in the depths as well.

Background: Little is known of Thessaly’s life before you first see her for the first time in ‘A Game of You’ and her first action is to kill someone. Not a terribly heartening beginning, never mind that he tried to kill her and her friends first.

Her first meeting with Morpheus does not go well, and yet months (or perhaps years) later she is back in his realm and is soon living with him in her own wing of his dream castle. It doesn’t take long for Thessaly to realize that what she thought was love isn’t. She leaves him and goes back to her quiet life, this time as a graduate student in NYC.

When Morpheus kills his son a series of events are set in motion, and Thessaly plays her part protecting Lyta Hall (an aspect of the Furies) for the Fates in exchange for some debts being forgotten. Unwillingly and at a price she aids in the dream kings downfall and death.

But life, as always, must go on.

She weeps for him at his wake and then as she has done for thousands of years she forgets him, goes back to school and fades into an unimportant existence.

Some time later she is targeted by a group of god’s of the underworld who want to kill her and feed off her ancient soul for as long as the power lasts.

Fetch, a ghost made of all the souls of the people Thessaly has killed, is sent to bring her to the underworld gods. On their quest Thessaly begins to like him, though she’d hardly admit it, and in fact she spares the lives of two of the underworld gods because he asks her to.

She gives him fair warning to keep his distance rather than destroying him in the end, a decision she later regrets when he gets her signed to a monster killing contract.

After a series of minor battles with lesser beasties he contracts her to kill a tharmic null, an undefeatable monster. To his credit he thought it didn't exist and would be no threat. Angry, and vengeful. She traps him in a mirror while she goes in search of a way to destroy the null, but every avenue she tries leads to a dead end and she finally returns resigned to her fate.

Just in time they realize that there is only one way to defeat the null, Fetch must expel all the souls he carries and kill it himself. He does so willingly, kissing Thessaly once before he perishes (can a ghost perish?), leaving Thessaly to deal with the men who sent the null after her to begin with and a legion of undead whiners who want their Fetch back.

Truth be told, she wants him back as well.

Personality: Thessaly is the last of an ancient race of witch, extremely long-lived, reckless, and deadly. Her actions, those that often spit in the face of immortals and the divine, speak louder than words.

Little is known of her daily existence or exactly how long she has been alive, long enough to see her second millennia certainly, but she won't tell the true number; after all a lady never reveals her age.

Though she doesn’t look like much, she’s tough as nails, and completely willing to sacrifice anyone and anything to maintain her own existence and safety. She never takes a threat lightly. She not only kills those who threaten her but goes a step farther and makes sure that what is left is unrecognizable. She pulls the moon out of orbit for her own goals. She stands up to immortal beings who hold her fate in their hands and refuses to be cowed.

She is concerned primarily with her own advancement and survival. She is an amoral, cold-blooded, proud, and ruthless character, though not a malicious one.

Thessaly is a rather brackish, down to Earth, sort of girlish ancient; a priestess of a following that no longer exists. The heart of the tragedy of Thessaly's life is her isolation, an isolation she has embraced as wholly her own.

She is a puzzle unto herself: She's a murderess, a sorceress, a guardian, a scholar and a lover.
