Name: Lucius Malfoy
Character Fandom: Harry Potter
Canonical Point of Entry: Before the books, late 1979 prior to Draco’s birth. Narcissa is nearly three months pregnant when he arrives in the village.
Physical Description: Lucius has the same pale, severe, good looks as his son. At twenty five he already walks with a cane, though it is for show and not out of necessity, and could be said to stroll rather than simply walk as though never hurried. His wand, elm with a dragon heartstring core, is mounted within the cane. He is the epitome of pure bred aristocracy. Nearly six feet tall, Lucius is slim with storm grey eyes, nearly translucent skin and white blonde hair.
Background: Lucius was born in 1954, the only son of Abraxas and Coraline Malfoy. His mother died when he was very young leaving him to the not so tender mercies of his strict, authoritarian father. Abraxas instilled in his son the ideals he felt all pure blood wizards should espouse, and stressed the importance of the family name and reputation.
In 1965 he started school at Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin house, even at the tender age of eleven he exhibited traits like cunning and cool deliberation before action and was soon a leader within his house. His marks, particularly those in charms and arithmancy, were very high and he was made Prefect in his fifth year despite dabbling in the darker arts with his friends. Being made head boy in his seventh year was shadowed by his father’s death, and Lucius gained control of the family fortune and reputation at the tender age of seventeen.
After graduation he retired to his home in Wiltshire and took up his father’s political affairs becoming deeply involved in gaining influence over various ministers and high ranking officials through whatever means he had at his disposal. It was through his friendship with several of Lord Voldemort’s followers that he became acquainted with the man and his plans. He willingly joined, the ethics espoused by Voldemort coinciding with those he’d been taught by his father, and was soon one of the Dark Lord’s most valued followers.
His work as a Death Eater was in keeping with the Malfoy image, he did his work through persuasion and corruption rather than killing and torture. A gifted Occlumence and adept with the Imperious curse in addition to the skills of an aristocrat he managed to keep his hands blood free while others did not.
He had been aware from and early age that his father intended that he should marry well, that he had in fact pre-selected the woman who would be Lucius’ wife. He had known Narcissa Black in school, she was beautiful, well bred, and intelligent, so when Cygnus Black suggested the match as what he and Lucius’ father had wanted he put forth no resistance.
They married and settled into a comfortable home life even as the war his master was fomenting began to take shape and Lord Voldemort began his rise. Amidst all this Narcissa became pregnant with their first child (likely their only child as neither desired more than one).
True he didn’t love her, but they would get along well and Cygnus (in the absence of his own father) assured Lucius that love, for what it was worth, would come eventually. As usual he was not wrong, but by then Lucius had learned that there was safety in dispassionate disinterest. Lucius’ life was full of social engagements, working for Voldemort and his young family.
Personality: Lucius Malfoy is generally a ruthless, aristocratic snob, who has a dislike of muggles, muggle-borns, and half bloods. Selfish and concerned with his family’s reputation he can be harsh, almost cruel, to those he thinks are beneath him. He can be the perfect gentleman, full of charm, sophisticated, and always on top of his game. He can also be extremely cold, even heartless, rude, obnoxious, and basically an ass.
He has an ability to get what he wants using power, charm, and the judicious use of fear; raised to be the best of the best, Lucius is the epitome of aristocracy in that he’s one big contradiction after another. He is arrogant and has an outwardly confident air that isn’t matched by what he actually feels. In fact, much of his outward appearance doesn’t reflect what he inwardly feels but a gentleman, and a pure-blood, has an image to protect. No matter the cost.
The only true thing one never need question about Lucius is that he loves his family, and will put their safety first whatever the cost to himself or his relationship with them.
