Name: Anne Elliot

Character Fandom: Persuasion

Canonical Point of Entry: Just prior to her arrival in Bath.

Physical Description: A finely made woman with delicate features and mild dark eyes. She was once a pretty girl, though she was never reckoned a beauty, but her bloom vanished early leaving her pale and thin. Her countenance is intelligent and her voice gentle and pleasant.

Background: Anne is the overlooked middle daughter of the vain, spendthrift Sir Walter Elliot, a baronet who is all too conscious of his good looks and rank and spends excessive amounts of money. Anne's mother, a fine, sensible woman, is long dead and her dear friend Lady Russel has taken her place in Anne's life acting as both mother and friend. Her elder sister, Elizabeth, resembles her father in temperament and her younger sister, Mary, is a nervous, clinging woman. Because she is neither the most beautiful nor the most image-conscious of his daughters, Sir Walter often overlooks Anne, slights her, and dismisses her opinions.

Though Anne seeks love, she is conscious of her duty to her position and the prudence of making a suitable match. Seeking to please those around her, in her youth, she was persuaded from following her heart and broke an engagement with a Frederick Wentworth young man of little fortune and what Lady Russel thought was a streak of dangerous impetuosity.

Some eight years later forced to rent their estate to Wentworth's sister and her husband Anne's father and older sister move to Bath while Anne goes to visit her younger sister Mary and her in-law's the Musgrove’s. Anne and Wentworth are thrust into company again, positions reversed as he has made the fortune he always intended to make at sea and her family's finances have become dire.

Personality: Anne Elliot is quiet and reserved, yet clever and practical, she sees the foolishness in her father's lavish spending and often recognizes the slights of her family and their vanity and pride more readily than other observers. Anne is level-headed, considerate of others, and humble.

She balances duty and passion in a composed and respectful way. She is feminine but is neither catty, flighty, nor hysterical; on the contrary, she is level-headed in difficult situations and constant in her affections. She is witty, clever, considerate and takes what little pride she has in practicality, intellect, and patience. She is filled with both inner strength and the sadness of a woman fully aware of the loneliness stretching out before her having pushed away the only man she has ever loved.
